Ankle Sprain

Background

  • Ankle sprains are the most frequent injury incurred during physical activity and account for up to 10% of all visits to the emergency department (Birrer 1999; Eisenhart et al 2003)
  • It has been estimated that 70-80% of physically active individuals will experience recurring ankle sprains and 40% of all acute ankle sprains are associated with reports of ankle instability (Bernier 1998;Casadio et al 2005)
  • Recommendations for exercise, bracing, or referral to physical therapy are uncommon (Cooke 2003) and estimated to occur in less than 5% of cases (Boyce 2004)
