Biomechanics Of The Patellofemoral Joint

Patellar Contact within Femoral Sulcus during range of motion
The patella glides inferiorly during knee flexion. At 20 degrees of knee flexion the medial and lateral facets initially contact the femur. At 45 degrees of knee flexion the middle of the patella and nearly all the width of the patella comes in contact with the femur. At 90 degrees, the superior 1/3 of patella is in contact with the distal femur. Once the angle exceeds 90 degrees, contact shifts inferiorly and laterally causing loading of the lateral and odd facets.
