Greater Trochanteric Bursitis and Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome

Trochanteric bursitis is inflammation in the bursa that lies between the gluteus medius and minimus tendons and the greater trochanter. Greater trochanteric pain syndrome is lateral hip pain without an inflammatory component. Recent evidence suggests that not all those diagnosed as bursitis have evidence of an inflammed bursa. Studies have shown that tendonopathy of the gluteus tendons causes a similar clinical presentation.
